Mind-Body Skills

Mind-Body Skills is an integrative, experiential program adapted from the Mind-Body Medicine groups run at Georgetown University Medical School to help doctors-in-training cope with stress, and learn how to help their future patients. People of all ages benefit from learning these proven techniques and developing personal strategies for understanding and managing stress. These two-hour sessions run for seven consecutive weeks, and attendance at all seven sessions is requested.

There are groups for adults, also for adolescents.  These techniques heighten self-awareness, self-care, and the ability to evoke what is known as the relaxation response. The relaxation response is related to what athletes experience when they are in “the zone” of peak performance.

Learning to cultivate this state of mind has been proven highly effective in:

  • decreasing anxiety and depression
  • strengthening the ability to focus and concentrate
  • heightening an overall sense of well-being

For individuals having chronic pain: Research shows that individuals who complete such programs for pain management show a decrease from an average of 12 doctor visits per year to an average of 7 visits a year. Depression and anxiety show a decrease, while feelings of being in control and general activity levels increase.

Sessions: These two-hour sessions run for seven consecutive weeks, and attendance at all seven sessions is requested. It is necessary to pre-register, and to speak with me prior to the start of classes.
